predecessors. The first of these three-part works, Sotto l’imperio, honours the della Scala family, Jacopo’s patrons in Verona; the
second, Sì com’ al canto, addresses an unknown lady; and the third is the famous tritextual madrigal Aquila altera written for the Italian visit of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in 1354/5.
