This volume, one of four including all the compositions in the ‘Winchester Songbook’ (see also AE11, 16 and 17), contains four early-fifteenth-century religious songs: Pater noster, Ave Maria, Credo in deum and Lolay lolay: As I lay. The three two-part pieces have English texts interspersed with Latin liturgical quotations such as ‘Pater noster’ and ‘Ave Maria’; the fourth is monophonic and entirely in English, apparently the refrain and first verse of a carol whose lengthy text survives complete elsewhere.
